Daniel Everett - Conversations with a Computer, 2008
Artist’s statement:
“Contained within the operating system of Mac Computers is a rudimentary electronic psychotherapist program. Meant to simulate a Rogerian therapist, it engages the participant in a cyclical conversation by taking his or her statements and roughly reconfiguring them into questions.
I met with this program three times a week for a month in order to discuss my fear that I was disappearing completely. These are three stills from our conversations.”

these stories: how many this year? how many is a lot?
these stories have always been here: someone i’ve never met to whom i suddenly feel close.
the eye of the storm: could anyone have told them what they needed to hear?
the rubble: didn’t people need to hear what they needed to say?
gay men who survived the plague have spoken of a moment - hazy, long overdue - when they realized it wasn’t normal for people their age to be dying.
the moment when they realized it had felt normal for a long time.
i don’t know how many this year (or last). one story is a lot, but i’ve lost count.
these stories aren’t new and it makes me feel old.
